In April 2016, around 16,000 persons were officially recorded as currently missing in Germany, approximately half of whom were under 18 years of age. Tracking on Two and Four Legs: Detectives and Mantrailing Dogs

If a person is missing and it cannot be assumed that an address investigation will lead to success, our investigators first analyse the environment of the target person (TP): What does the TP’s usual daily routine look like? When do they leave for school or work, and when do they return? Which leisure activities or hobbies do they pursue, and which social contacts do they maintain? Based on these findings, the search area can usually be narrowed down. It is often located close to the individual’s residence, yet our detectives will extend the search beyond Thuringia as far as necessary for the respective case.

A particularly effective method that our experienced investigators have relied on successfully for many years is mantrailing. In this process, the missing person is tracked with the assistance of specially trained scent-tracking dogs that have been prepared for this task since puppyhood. The dogs’ highly sensitive sense of smell enables them to follow the missing person’s trail even weeks or months later using a scent article (for example, an item of the TP’s clothing).
