The cultural-historical significance of the independent city of Weimar is well known beyond national borders; homes and workplaces of poets and composers such as Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Bach, Liszt and Strauss attract around 350,000 visitors each year. With 63,818 inhabitants, Weimar is the fourth-largest city in Thuringia and impresses with its historic backdrop, including monuments and art-historical exhibitions focusing on the 16th to 20th centuries and the city’s cultural achievements. Consequently, Weimar was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 for the preservation of buildings and parklands from “Classical Weimar”. However, our private detectives in Weimar usually have little time for these landmarks, as their assignments in the city generally involve surveillance due to suspected infidelity or checks on employees engaged in unauthorised secondary employment (moonlighting) or simply calling in sick without cause.
Weimar owes much of its employment to its historic setting and related tourism: in 2014, 23,514 social security-contributing employees worked in the city, with 11.2 percent in manufacturing and 87.7 percent in services, of which 37.6 percent were in the hospitality sector. Not all of these employees are honest – our commercial detective agency for Weimar specialises in discreetly monitoring suspicious staff and is happy to assist local businesses. Approximately 48.3 percent of Weimar’s economy is in the service sector and 20.5 percent in retail; manufacturing, at around 30 percent, plays a smaller role than in GDR times but remains an important factor.
Around half (approximately 12,000) of those employed in Weimar commute from surrounding areas. This helps explain the city’s significantly above-average inner-city unemployment rate of 8.5 percent (2014). High unemployment may be one reason for rising crime. In Weimar district, offences increased by 248 to 5,956 cases in 2014, while the clearance rate (CR) continued to fall, reaching 55.3 percent. In the city itself, 1,854 offences were recorded. Particularly troubling is the increase in thefts (mainly residential burglaries and bicycle theft) from 288 to 507 cases – a rise of around 76 percent, with a clearance rate for these offences at an unacceptable 21.1 percent! The statistics for property and forgery offences are equally questionable: supposedly, cases fell by 182 to 486, yet offences committed in Weimar whose perpetrators flee abroad are not included in the statistics (2014). In short, the numbers can be made to look better than reality.
Property crimes are often treated as secondary by authorities, as the perpetrator cannot always be identified, the effort for minor damage is deemed disproportionate, and law enforcement in Weimar, as across Germany, is poorly staffed and equipped. Our detective agency for Weimar spares no expense on personnel, technical equipment, or investigator training.
